Blackout tattoos aren’t something most people decide on overnight. They’re bold, heavy, and permanent in a way that deserves some real thought. Whether you’re covering old work, starting fresh, or just drawn to the look, here’s what you should know before booking.
The Process
A blackout is exactly what it sounds like - large areas of solid black ink. If it’s a smaller piece, it can usually be done in one sitting. But if you’re going big, like a full arm or leg, we’ll split it into multiple sessions. Not because it takes “passes” to make it solid, but because doing the entire thing in one go would be brutal on your body and difficult to heal.
When we split it, each session is usually a half-day - around 4 to 5 hours. For example, a full arm blackout is normally broken into three sessions: one for the lower arm, one for the upper arm, and one for the ditch and elbow. This way your body can handle the healing process properly, and each section gets the attention it needs.
Our Experience
At Hand of Hope Tattoo, we’ve built a reputation in Manchester & Stockport for producing some of the cleanest, most solid blackouts around. Blackouts demand a very different approach to tattooing compared to detailed designs - consistency and technique are everything. Our artists know exactly how to work with large-scale pieces to make sure the coverage is smooth and even, and that the healed result looks as strong as it does on day one.
Preparation
Getting a blackout is as much about preparation as it is about the tattoo itself. Eat a good meal beforehand, stay hydrated, and clear your schedule so you’re not rushing off right after. For bigger projects, be ready for multiple sessions, and give yourself the time and space to heal properly between them. Mentally, know that it’s an intense process - but one that can be incredibly rewarding once it’s done.
The Why
People choose blackouts for all sorts of reasons. Covering old tattoos, creating a clean slate, or simply because they like the aesthetic. There’s no right or wrong reason - just your reason.
Blackouts aren’t for everyone, and that’s okay. But if it’s something you’ve been considering, take your time, look at healed examples, and think it through. When you’re ready, we’ll be here to make it happen - with the solid coverage and experience we’re known for.
